Arbitrage
and Trading

General information

Betting is in many ways similar to investing in stocks whose outcome is hardly certain but based mostly on probability. The price or outcome of an event could easily take another direction, completely contrary to our expectations/convictions. Thus, most often than not, investors and bettors alike, carry out their projects based on the best probable outcome of a particular investment, which despite the amount of certainty involve, things could still nicely work out against their disfavor. And that, constitutes one of the biggest challenges in this line of business, to know the risk involve and yet, always willing to walk through it unperturbed.

However, that’s the story of the many, for some few skilled individuals have been able to make consistent gains regardless of which direction an outcome might cunningly choose to take. These, are those we refer to as Arbers, Scalpers, or better still, arbitrage traders who mostly often use the best betting platform for their job.

Arbitrage and trading

In sports betting, the whole idea is wrapped around three parties, that is, the bettor, the bookmaker, and the predictable event say a football match, tennis, or basketball. As such, understanding arbitrage and trading within this sphere require some knowledge of how the three generally operate. And that’s quite simple.

Bookies (sportsbooks to be specific) normally provide the odds for a particular event while punters bet against them (this is totally different when it comes to betting exchanges where bettors directly wager against each other). And given that a bookmaker will always try as much as possible to offer odds that are more attractive than those of its competitors, it often leads to considerable discrepancies (unfortunately), between them. These differences thus, provide skilled bettors with arbitrage opportunities, which have become one of the most favorable betting strategies today. And here is how it all works.

How it works

Consider two betting services (Bookie A and Bookie B) both covering the same sports event, e.g., a football match between X FC and Y FC. While they may try to offer odds with as few discrepancies as possible on this event, it sometimes happened that they might miss the proper alignment due to different limitations and create a very wide gap that offers a win-win situation for bettors if spotted. Such an opening is what is often referred to as an arb. This is something bookies can hardly avoid due to market inefficiency and other similar factors.

An efficient market would mean all adds add up to 100%, and if that’s the case, it implies that both always have the same winning/losing/draw chance in a game, which is okay! But that’s rarely the case, as different opinions differ and that’s where bookmakers and bettors build their gains. And despite the difference in opinion, bookmakers in providing odds will definitely incorporate a service margin which always adds to the efficient percentage, thus the saying, “bookies always win.” But here is the blunder, in normal circumstances, the total probability of both back and lay odds on a specific event should always be greater or equal to 100% in every two random pairs of betting services, for the reasons we have explained.

However, suppose Bookie A has odds such as 40% for X FC to Win and Bookie B offers 50% that X FC will lose, combining the two percentages, we have 90 instead. The 10% is the unfortunate gab and constitutes the profit a punter would catch if they chose to place both bets at the different services.  And that’s arbitrage betting.

Conclusion

Now, you must have seen us using combining Arbitrage plus trading which should have been two separate concepts. The fact is, there isn’t that much difference between the two. Traders would normally make use of arbitrage opportunities as such, the process is often referred to as arbitrage trading, since it involves making use of discrepancies in odds in other to lock in profits. Whether you prefer focusing just on betting exchanges, sportsbooks, or both, it doesn’t really matter, for once a gab is spotted on either services on the same event, all you need is wager accordingly to reap the proceeds.

Though the process seems easy enough, that is hardly the case if you try to go manual. It is important to always consider the best betting software and tools, especially the famous arbitrage calculator and a betting software account registration to have access to different bookmakers from a single platform and cut the need of operating separate bookie accounts. All in all, arbitrage betting is a great route to guaranteed profits in sports betting.
