The “Wise Guy” of the Marathon
At the 1904 St. Louis Games, American runner Fred Lorz was the first to cross the finish line, but many spectators were outraged by the scene – after all, they had seen Lorz cover part of the course in a car!
The man then tried to explain himself: he had cramped up around the 14 km mark of the marathon and had hitchhiked back to the stadium. However, with a few kilometers to go, the car broke down and he ran the rest of the way, passing first “as a joke. He even said that he did not intend to keep the prize. But it was too late: he was banned from competition for a year.
Wolverhampton Going Monkey Balls Crazy
What was supposed to be another case of doping in sports history became a ridiculous and absurd episode in English soccer in 1939. The pivot of the story was the Wolverhampton Wanderers team. Wolverhampton’s beautiful history of influence in sport has the taint of the team having pioneered the use of a technique, later considered doping, from monkey testicles.
Buckley announced to the press and the other clubs that the use of this technique was not doping, and therefore there was no ban. Other clubs even adopted the technique, causing the British authorities to discuss in parliament whether to allow the use of monkey testicles in athletes. The decision was not favorable to the treatment, and today monkey balls are banned in the sport.
The Pancake Races
The Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, in the Christian tradition, is known in some countries as “Pancake Tuesday”. If the tradition of eating the food on the date before Lent already seems attractive, it gets even better in the town of Olney (England). There, since 1445, the famous Pancake Race has been held every year.
As the (somewhat macho) local tradition dictates, only women participate in this curious competition. Armed with a frying pan and a pancake and wearing aprons, they race to get to the church first. Once there, they must throw the pancake upwards – and not drop it.
