We hear all kinds of stories in the world of sports, one crazier than the other, but have you ever heard of extreme ironing? Well, it was invented precisely to show that you don’t have to give up sports to do your household chores.
The Origin
It is said that the sport appeared in 1997, in England. Phill Shaw, an extreme sports practitioner, would have arrived home and found a pile of clothes to iron, but since he wanted to go climbing, he had the idea of taking the ironing board, the iron, and the clothes together, so he wouldn’t miss doing one thing or the other.
Extreme ironing is basically ironing clothes while practicing some extreme sport or being in a place completely out of the ordinary. In Germany, there is a championship disputed by athletes from different sports, but the countries where extreme ironing is most practiced are England, Australia, and Japan.
Modern practice
Extreme Ironing gained international fame after the screening of a documentary called Extreme Ironing: Pressing for Victory, produced by Wag TV for Channel 4. The program followed the efforts of the British team and their eventual winning of the bronze and gold medals at the 1st World Extreme Ironing Championships in Germany. A side story recorded the rivalry between the Extreme Ironing Bureau (EIB) and a dissident group called Urban Housework, which was trying to establish its own radical sport based on vacuum cleaning. The film was later shown on the National Geographic Channel.
