Juventus vs. Chelsea

The match between Juventus and Chelsea ended dramatically for Chelsea, with a 3-0 victory for Juventus. This also means that I won the bet I made on Juventus’s victory. The official team of UEFA showed three centre-backs, a best guess to which Di Matteo lent credence when he spoke of tactical tweaks that would make it very difficult for the opposition.

The presence of César Azpilicueta in front of Branislav Ivanović on the right could explain the effort of Stephan Lichtsteiner to attack the other flank, where Ashley Cole had no such support. The importance of Azpilicueta’s role became obvious in the minute of his substitution, when Kwadwo Asamoah found a chance that he could never take advantage of before.

When Di Matteo refused to guarantee a place in the side for Fernando Torres, the inference was that Daniel Sturridge might replace him in the starting XI. The elimination of Torres left Chelsea without any “natural finisher”. Due to the fact that Gary Cachill played as a centre-back, he was simply unable to spend too much time predating. This led to the three occasions when the away team got the ball into dangerous positions within Chelsea’s penalty area.
