Brazilian Olympic cyclist Janildes Fernandes, 41, is being accused of aggression by an arbitrator of the sport. The commotion happened on the last day 3, during the Goiás Championship, when the veteran, who is also president of the Goiás Federation, would have tried to punch Izis Alfaia, who besides being a referee was the entity’s treasurer.
In a report made to the police, Izis said she was assaulted after the commission of arbitrators responsible for the race decided to punish the cyclist who came third in the race, Mayla Moraes, for giving a close up to a rival in the final meters of the event held in Senador Canelo (GO). Janildes, who won the race, did not see the incident but came out in defense of Mayla, who is her friend.
Upon leaving the race, Izis went to the police station and registered a police report. A corpus delicti exam at the IML confirmed edemas caused by the fall. Unhappy with the aggression, Izis resigned as treasurer of the Goiás Federation in a letter she published on social networks. Other board members accompanied her, leaving Janildes alone on the board. Janildes is part of the “Fernandes clan,” which dominated women’s road cycling in the country for most of the century, but is involved in several doping cases. Clemilda, who went to the Beijing-2008, London-2012, and Rio-2016 Olympics, is serving her second suspension, this time for tampering with an anti-doping test.
Of the whole clan, only Janildes, who went to the 2000, 2004, and 2012 Olympics, never fell into doping. She recently moved into political positions within cycling, electing herself to the command of the Goiás Federation and to the Board of Directors of the Brazilian Cycling Confederation (CBC). Denounced to the entity’s STJD for the assault, she will lose her post if she is punished.
