Switzerland vs. Cyprus

Saturday, March 23nd 2013, 19:45 CET

Last Saturday, Switzerland missed the opportunity to take a clear, decisive lead in World Cup qualifying Group E in the match with Cyprus, when none of the teams was able to score a single goal during the match. The fact that the game ended in a fade, goalless draw, made me lose the 10 units I placed on Switzerland’s victory at William Hill.

After five matches played, Switzerland have an advantage of two points over Iceland and Albania, who both won on Friday; but while these teams remain confident in getting a place in the 2014 finals that are going to take place in Brazil, the Swiss might yet regret their wasted chances.

Switzerland possessed the ball most of the time and had more opportunities to score, but Cypriots could have punished them several times in counter-attacks. The best of them occurred in the 56th minute of the match, when the fine shot of Dimitris Christofi was tipped wide by diving keeper Yann Sommer. Seven minutes later, Xherdan Shaqiri went close, cutting in from the right and driving a low left-foot shot just wide.

Shaqiri created more panic in the 79th minute, when his shot into the box was deflected out to Valentin Stocker. Unfortunately for him and his team, he found nothing but the side netting.

In the final minutes, Switzerland were noticeably desperate and went close to scoring twice: first, when Haris Seferovic forced a save from Antonis Georgallides and secondly when substitute Erin Derdiyok shot wide from a promising angle.

After this match, Switzerland remain as one of the favorite teams in qualifying to WC 2014, while Cyprus have four points from five games and are one point and one position above bottom team, Slovenia.

Result:-10 units, bet lost
