Among the many stories of the world of sports, moments of fair play are rare, but they still happen. And whenever they do, the world looks on in disbelief, praising the athlete endlessly for a decision that, most likely, was against his or her interest or that of his or her team in the competition.
But what makes a true athlete is not just winning, but competing fairly and honestly. These examples of fair play understand this like few others.
The prize for not scoring a goal
During a Premier League match between West Ham and Everton in 2000, the game was tied 1-1 down the stretch. Everton goalkeeper Paul Gerrard injured his knee and fell, leaving an open goal.
The ball was crossed to Di Canio, but instead of putting it into the empty net, he caught it with his hands, allowing Gerrard to receive treatment. His act of sportsmanship won him the FIFA Fair Play award in 2001.
The medal is rightfully yours
Shawn Crawford placed fourth in track and field at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but the second and third-place finishers were disqualified for stepping over the lines, meaning Crawford received a silver medal.
A week later, Crawford sent his medal to one of the disqualified players with a letter saying, “I know this will not replace the moment, but I want you to have it because I believe it is rightfully yours. – Shawn Crawford.”
Together until the end
In the 5,000m maneuvers at the Rio Olympics, Nikki Hamblin of New Zealand fell on American Abbey D’Agostino with about four laps to go. D’Agostino helped Hamblin to her feet but then collapsed, in horrible pain.
Hamblin was expected to continue her own race, but she returned the favor and helped the American. Both went the remaining mile of the race, obviously finishing last, but were awarded spots in the final after protests from their respective teams.
